The Metropolitan brand has been around since the mid-1990s, born under the Nat Sherman name in Manhattan and carried forward by two of the people who knew it best. When Altria shut down Nat Sherman’s cigar operations in 2020, Michael Herklots and Brendon Scott, both former Nat Sherman executives, bought the rights to the portfolio and relaunched it under Ferio Tego in 2021. The Metropolitan Habano is the Nicaraguan chapter of that story. Where the Connecticut and Maduro expressions are rolled by Quesada in the Dominican Republic, the Habano goes to Plasencia Cigars in Nicaragua for a 100% Nicaraguan puro built entirely around volcanic terroir.
Nicaraguan Habano wrapper, Nicaraguan binder, Nicaraguan filler, all of it grown in the same soil that has made the country one of the most important tobacco-producing nations on the planet. In this 6×52 Toro, the result is a medium-bodied smoke with a rich, satisfying profile of baking spices, cedar, roasted nuts, earth, and a natural sweetness that builds subtly through the second half. Smooth enough for an afternoon smoke, interesting enough to keep your attention for the full hour. Eighteen to a box. The Nat Sherman legacy, still very much alive.
