Most Connecticut-wrapped cigars pair their wrapper with a binder that keeps the profile smooth, controlled, and firmly in mild territory. Nick Fusco made a different call on the James Avenue Connecticut. The Nicaraguan Habano binder underneath this Connecticut-seed wrapper is the decision that defines this expression and separates it from every other Connecticut in its price range. Habano binder brings structure, natural spice, and a backbone that Connecticut-seed wrappers almost never get the chance to work against, and the result in this 6×54 box-pressed Toro is a mild-to-medium smoke with considerably more going on underneath the surface than the wrapper color suggests.
Cedar and toasted bread dominate the first third as you would expect, but the Habano binder pushes through with a gentle pepper note in the second third that keeps the profile from ever becoming one-dimensional. The Nicaraguan filler ties everything together with a natural earthiness that grounds the whole experience. Rolled at Miguel Pinto’s MGE factory in Estelí and packaged twenty to a painted wood cabinet box. The most approachable of the four James Avenue expressions, and the one that earns its place in a humidor full of bold cigars by doing something none of them can.
