Summary

Matt Booth has never been shy about his feelings on ring gauge. When he brought the Big Payback 70s back after a long absence, he called it his life's mission โ€” "to produce a combustible vessel so engorged and far more magnificent than its standard counterpart in cylindrical presentation." That's Matt Booth. And the cigar delivers on every word of it. The Big Payback 70s is a 7x70 built on a blend unique to this vitola โ€” a Honduran Olancho San Agustรญn wrapper, a leaf from one of Central America's most celebrated tobacco regions, draped over a Connecticut Broadleaf binder and a three-country filler of Dominican, Honduran, and Nicaraguan tobaccos, all rolled at STG Danlรญ in Honduras. The result is a medium-bodied smoke that burns cool and slow for hours, delivering earth, dark fruit, baking spice, roasted coffee, toasted cedar, and soft pepper across a long, evolving profile that only a 70-ring gauge can fully deliver. This is the format for the smoker who doesn't want the session to end. Clear your afternoon. You're going to need it.

First, I adore Room 101 cigars! Some are complex, and others are just dang good staples of consistency, from burn on down to flavor. Matt Booth has been onto something for years with his concoctions. So I was eager to smoke this 70โ€™s behemoth. Also, the Payback is so affordable for fans of premium cigars. This is a long smoke, however. I burn through my sticks quickly, but this one was well over 2 plus hoursโ€” probably 3 for many other people. This sucker is not the most complex, but is consistent the whole way through on flavor. Itโ€™s not too heavy, yet I definitely picked up coffee notes, dark chocolate, along with some tart raisin funk, which really hit the spot. Iโ€™ve smoked two of these now and got the same notes from both of them. In the end, itโ€™s a quality smoke and quite nice for a Saturday afternoon. I picked up a 5 pack. Iโ€™ll probably pick up more as it is an enjoyable cigar whenever feeling that itch. Iโ€™m looking forward to the Johnny Tobacconaut Maduro, as Iโ€™m a big fan of the original, as well as the 10th anniversary. They have different profiles, but so good nonetheless in their own way. The OG is my morning smoke almost every weekend. The 10th on the other hand is so hard to find. Hereโ€™s hoping the Maduro lives up to the pre-release hype.

Ordered the 70 Payback out of curiosity. Really impressed. It kept me busy for a solid two hours. Ordering again today.
