From Americanvikingcigars.com, “Rico Barato is not a real person. We made him up. His name means Rico – ‘rich’ Barato – ‘cheap’. These are our econonmy cigar brand, and they have a very special place in our hearts. There was a long time when co-owner Tim Swanson could only afford sticks like these. Each stick is a mix of long filler with some short filler sprinkled in, making this a Cuban Sandwich. The drawback with these affordable cigars is that they burn a little faster, and have a pretty simple flavor profile. But we feel that these Connecticut sticks offer incredible consistency, construction, and flavor… especially for their shelf price.”

On the nose:
Sweet,peanut,creamy
First light up:
This is where the stick disappointed me. Upon cutting the cap,the wrapper cracked and begin to come apart. I did continue to smoke and got hints of leather, dark notes and an earthy flavor.
First 3rd:
Earthy, leather, slight coffee and still battling with the wrapper coming apart.
Second 3rd:
Flavor stayed the same for me with some added bitterness, but great smoke output. I am still dealing with the wrapper coming apart.
Final 3rd
A little sweetness along with the bitterness. Again the wrapper issue!
Final Thoughts:
Nice burn,ok flavor. If it wasn’t for the wrapper issue it probably would have gained another star. I would probably not buy this stick again.

It wasn’t bad at all, the taste was cool and the construction was ok, I did have to touch it up once. It was milder than I expected but over all was ok. Burned kinda quick as well but would I buy it again, sure

Very surprised by the tooth this thing had. The construction was great with a good flavor. Great budget stick.

This was a nice cigar all around, but I thought the last third didn’t taste all that great. Otherwise a great cigar.

Great economy cigar. Good flavor and suprisingly good construction for the price. The flavor, however, started to get a little bitter in the final third and I did have to touch it up once, but when you consider that this is a budget cigar it can easily be forgiven. It’s not the most pretty or flavorful, but it doesn’t need to be. Overall, I’m satisfied. Will be ordering again in the future.

This is probably one of the best flavors I’ve ever tasted in a cigar and rivals the flavor of some $20-$30 sticks I’ve tasted. Unlike some peoples experience I tend to make a more shallow cut so my cigar stayed perfectly in tact and had a beautiful tightness and consistency down the entire shaft, the light was inconsistent because my lighter crapped out on me halfway through the light (what I get for not getting the cigars daily lighter lol) but the burn tried it’s best to even itself out.
The first third; was instantly creamy and beautifully balanced with that deep roasted honeysuckle flavor that comes from a good maduro, the smoke itself was of faint walnut and dried leather with a finish of that iconic “old world” tobacco taste.
The second third; brought the flavor of toasted honeysuckle and dried walnuts straight to the front of the palate with a finish of leather and tobacco.
The final third: actually mellowed slightly moving Bach to leather and walnut with a new peppery-ness that almost rounded out the experience perfectly. This will most definitely become a daily smoke for me and I pray that Rico remembers his last name and doesn’t raise the price too high, these are amazing.

This cigar has a very expensive looking band, who ever created it, is a genius. It has a velvety feel but mine developed cracks, as well as holes in the burn line. There’s chocolate, earth, leather, slight pepper and the wrapper is sweet. Constant Crooked burn, lots of touch ups. Ashes fast, burns fast. It’s a light Maduro with a little coffee in it. A slightly strong retro hale, and it’s consistent throughout. I can’t say that I’d buy a bundle of these, but I wanted to try it at least. My score on this came out to a 97! (Just kidding)

I wouldn’t recommend. Taste was bland and fell apart when cut.

I have smoked Quorum and Factory Smokes and these are way better than both. Great stick to fill your humidor or an EDC. They held together and are firmer than the factory smokes and the flavor is way better than Quorum sticks. I will for sure be trying the Connecticut Toros next.

I know these are economy but they’re completely unsmokable. I’ve had other variations of the Ricos that I love but I ordered 20 and I’ve tried 6 with different humidities, temps, cuts and even ordered a perfect draw to try to save them with no luck. The draw is so tight and nothing I’ve done has fixed it. Disappointed.
Tim Swanson –
Steve, you’re absolutely right. These are economy cigars, but they certainly should be both smokable and good! I would love the opportunity to replace the bad ricos that you’ve had and hopefully give you a better experience with the brand that we’re so proud of. I’ll reach out to you by email! -Tim
