From Americanvikingcigars.com, “Rico Barato is not a real person. We made him up. His name means Rico – ‘rich’ Barato – ‘cheap’. These are our econonmy cigar brand, and they have a very special place in our hearts. There was a long time when co-owner Tim Swanson could only afford sticks like these. Each stick is a mix of long filler with some short filler sprinkled in, making this a Cuban Sandwich. The drawback with these affordable cigars is that they burn a little faster, and have a pretty simple flavor profile. But we feel that these Connecticut sticks offer incredible consistency, construction, and flavor… especially for their shelf price.”

Let me start off by saying this isn’t the best cigar I have ever had. However, for $3.00 this is my FAVORITE STICK OF ALL TIME. The flavors weren’t super complex and no huge transitions were made, but man was it a good consistent flavor. My biggest complaint comes with the burn. I did have to touch the cigar up a couple of times. This didn’t really take away from the experience at all it was just a little annoying. Again this is a $3.00 stick you have to understand it’s gonna have flaws. I will be buying 18 packs of these in the future. I would love if in the future there could be a box with 20 available.

flavor alone is worth 3 dollars, very pleasant with a coffee. did not have to touch up with a lighter and burned pretty evenly even with wind. over all not bad for a 3 dollar stick. only flaw is that it seemed to burn a little fast due to being mixed filler, but still good though!

I have read some negative comments about this cigar, but it was not bad it performed well, flavor was good so for a budget stick not bad. That is what we have to take it for a budget stick. I see it in my future.

I got this stick as part of the American Viking 7-pack sampler and I was quite impressed. I used a V cutter and the draw was solid throughout. The taste was good, it never canoed, and never went out the whole smoke. Everything was consistent from start to finish. This is definitely a cigar that I want to have in my humidor for the future, especially at this price point!

Loved everything about it, a must try if your looking to try something new

It pains me to rate an american viking cigar 2 stars. But I ordered a bundle of these, the flavor was decent, but the construction was not that great. First 3 cigars have had burning issues. Usually coring themselves. Thinking they were too dry, I let them sit in the humidor for a week. The next 3 also exhibited the same behaviors. The $3/stick price tag is hard to argue with though, and the reason I didn’t give them 1 star. I feel the factory smokes are a lot better construction for a similar price point.

I would love to give this a better rating but as soon as I cut the tip, the wrapper and binder cracked at the seam right down to the band which made the whole smoke kind of annoying. Otherwise the construction was great. Great flavor. I had to touch up the burn frequently and I didn’t rush the cigar. Great stick but needs some work.

This is a great stick for the price. Nice consistent flavor, probably not gonna blow your mind but a great mild everyday smoke. Had to touch it up 2-3 times but still burned pretty even with a great draw.

One great stick! it was smoother then the charter oak Robusto. A little harsh at the final third definitely recommend.
Great smoke for a beginner like myself!!
Andrewm2362 –
For a $3 stick it was amazing!! Perfect daily smoke! Also perfect for having friends over and not feeling bad offering them a cigar that’s good flavor and mild for new cigar smokers!

The flavor great, the construction is bad. They fall apart at the end cap. The wrapper is so thin they just don’t hold up. Several were un-smokable. Sad because what I was able to smoke was good for an affordable everyday smoke

Nothing to write home about but still a stick I smoked to the end. No a complex smoke but a consistent flavor all the way through. As far as budget cigars goes this was not the worst. Had hints of coffee may some cedar. Burned pretty decent as well.

Just finished my first stick after letting them rest for a few weeks. Cigars that have been 5, 6, 7 times this price haven’t compared. I’m a newb, yes, but this is top 3 of the 40-50 different smokes i’ve tried but what really takes it up a notch is that it’s well below $3, come on. I will be ordering a bundle shortly. Great work on this one American Viking.

Great burn no construction issues. Thick smoke and a consistent burn absolute steal for 3$
Garrett Fong (verified owner) –
A great budget cigar with great flavor. My only complaint would be that the construction can be lacking sometimes, but in my opinion, the flavor makes up for it all.
Mouzani (verified owner) –
Overall for $3 not bad at all, and great for everyday cheap smoke for doing chores around the house or even pairing with your coffee, smoke is thick and draws ok and the flavor is consistent without many changes through the 3 levels of the cigar, had to light up 2-3 times because it went out, I do draw about once every minute to minute and a half, I would buy again for sure.

So far I have tried about 8+ cheap cigars and this is the only one that I like and will be purchasing a bundle in the future
Gingerbeardman (verified owner) –
The flavor from this stick is exactly what it needs to be for 4 bucks. I would definitely buy this one again.

Pretty good stick for running around, some had burn issues but overall I liked them. Wound up buying 3 more packs, but after just pulling out a 3 inch wad of hair out of one of them, I’m going to throw them all right into the trash.
Makes me wonder what the environment they are rolled in looks like.
Tim Swanson –
Holy hair Jackson! That’s just not ok! I would be as grossed out as you. It sounds like we owe you some cigars… minus the hair. If you’d be willing to send an email to hello@cigarsdaily.com, I would like to replace the cigars for you, or get you a different blend of a similar value. I really like the Rico Barato, and I’ve seem some weird stuff come out of cigars. But a WAD of hair is too much! Please email us and I’ll get you squared away sir.

I’ve been looking for a value stick to have around for the random weekday smoke and this just might be it! Paired well with a pour of Penelope toasted. The lighter Connecticut profile played nicely with the sweet almost marshmallow flavor of the bourbon. I will be buying more in the future, it’ll be great to have some for my non cigar enthusiast friends.

Awesome budget cig!!! Great smoke and draw. The burn and ash equivalent to it’s price. Highly recommend, especially while doing a honey do around the casa.
Stevo406 (verified owner) –
100% without a doubt the best economy stick by far. These will always been stocked on bulk.

Excellent mellow cigar! Great price as well. Will definitely purchase more in the future!

Holy smokes they are my new daily cigars. Great taste, great burn, great experience. I can’t believe it’s less than $60 for a box of 20.

Very good economy stick. I’ve been into cigars for only around 7 months. I started right at 21. I’m still creating a good palate so take my review with a grain of salt.
I was wanting to find a good economy stick not to break the bank and the Rico Barato is what came to mind. I saw it on cigars daily YouTube a few years back before I could even smoke.
It’s very smooth for being a Cuban sandwich. It also has a complex flavor for only being a few bucks. Everyone has a different taste preference but I enjoy Connecticut’s like these. It has a very smooth creamy nuttiness to the flavor profile. I also got a little bit of earth specifically like hay on the back of the flavor profile. The flavor profile stayed the same all the way till the last third. It also stayed very light all the way through. I paired it with a cup of coffee which added to the flavor experience.
Construction of it was actually surprisingly good for a 3 dollar cigar. I’ve had 10 dollar cigars that weren’t even par to this. The burn was absolutely perfect till the end. The wrapper never pealed or cracked. I used a straight cut and the cap held up great.
Overall this is a great cigar for yard work or enjoying it with a cup of coffee like I did. The best part of it for me is the price point. Can’t beat it.
