From CAO’s website, “A Pilon is a carefully layered stack of tobacco leaves that helps ferment the tobacco to maximize the flavor and color of the leaves. Dating back to 19th century Cuba, this natural method of fermentation delivers a superior taste and appearance that can’t be reached otherwise. CAO Pilon uses this time-honored method to give you a cigar with deep, rich colors and unprecedented depths of flavor. “

CAO achieves superior flavor in the Pilon be using an age old tobacco curing process. They group their tobacco (referred to as a Pilon) in smaller bunches, and cure them at lower temperatures over a longer period of time. The result is a blend with exemplary notes of wood, earth, a touch of pepper, and a raisiny sweetness.

Something different from CAO but same great product. Medium strength and body with nice cedar and slight chocolate notes. Great even burn. Only knock was I had to relight it twice. I will buy again.

Today I smoked the CAO pilon and here’s the run down. Right off the light, I did taste what seemed like a light raisin, which dropped off very quickly. Very strong retro hale of black pepper with a bite. Into the first third not much on flavors, very mild. There’s leather with some creaminess from the wrapper. It has a short finish, nice draw and very good smoke output. Chunky flaky ash. Into the second third it gave me a little cedar with a way soother retro. Some spice came into play. Still leathery. Low strength nicotine, mild flavor, medium body. Slight sweetness note in the aftertaste. There is a spice note but the flavor is hard to determine, it might be cinnamon. It does have a wavy burn line. This whole cigar was like a morning stick you can comfortably grab after breakfast. The retro hale in the final third does pick back up with with a spicy black pepper bite to it. Overall it was an enjoyable stick just not in my wheelhouse. It was smooth at times and rough other times. I would probably score this at 86 points.

I’m a little more than half way through a box that have been resting a few months. My biggest gripe is with construction. 80% of these sticks go out in the second third, they all end up tunnelling. Been in the humi with 50-80 other sticks that all smoke fine.
