E.P. Carrillo Encore Black (5.37×52)
$17.00 – $152.99
E.P. Carrillo’s award winning Encore has gone full strength with a dark oily Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro wrapper and Mexican San Andres binder. The fillers on this blend are a carefully selected combination of Nicaraguan tobaccos from the Condega, Esteli, and Jalapa growing regions. It’s a powerful sounding blend, but the best thing about this cigar is that it has been blended by cigar legend Ernesto Perez Carrillo. If any new cigar is poised to be a highly rated top 25 blend, it’s this one.

Purchased 5 pack from Cigars Daily. Arrived today and could not wait. V cut and smoke at 66% RH.
I rate this cigar at 92. Little lacking in flavor complexity. Age should help!
Cigar Aficionado rating of 96.
While the cigar is not a limited edition, production is limited to 5,000 boxes for 2024.
FIRST THIRD
Begins with a flavor profile of toasted oak, rich earth, pepper spices, tobacco, leather and minerals. Retrohales are a good match for the flavor, with a bit more pepper. Touches of creaminess and fruity sweetness begin to develop, while the pepper in the retrohale loses some of its strength. There’s just a touch of bitterness in the smoke stemming from the earthiness and espresso in the profile. Flavor is medium, body is medium and strength is medium-minus. Construction is very good, with no issues thus far. Smoke output fantastic with creamy texture. Ash flaky and chunky. Straight burn.
SECOND THIRD
The second third starts with earth-and-pepper combination with a touch of minerals. Retrohales are fuller-bodied, and I pick up the fruity sweetness and creaminess to the flavor. Around the midway point I get some sweetness coming from the creaminess, though it is an undertone. A retrohale has a touch of dry firewood, and leather taking over for the earth. White pepper and espresso are ever present. Flavor is medium-full, body is medium-plus and strength is medium. Construction is very good, as the draw is smooth, the burn line is even, and there is plenty of smoke. Smoke remains creamy. Ash is flaky and chunky. Strength, body and flavor profile all slightly increased this third. Thus far I would say a great smoking, medium strength, earthy cigar.
FINAL THIRD
There is some chalkiness at the start of the final third. Creaminess is an undertone as well as the toasted oak wood. The earthiness has not fully replaced them yet. There is a leather, earth and pepper combination. The finish has a bit of chalk and mineral. The flavor in this section stays around medium, body is medium-full, and strength is medium -plus. Once again, construction—the draw, burn line, and smoke production—are very good. Stronger finish which I like! In sum, easy, great smoking cigar with earth and wood overtones and sweet and spicy undertones. This smoking experience reminds me of relaxing around a camp fire. Definitely box worthy. Next smoke after resting and with glass of bourbon. Both will add to the flavor profile where this cigar was lower than anticipated. Complexity of flavors needs age!
