Oscar Valladares is renowned within the cigar industry for masterfully crafting savory blends that provide rich flavor, outstanding quality, and affordability. Oscar started out in 2012 with his first release named after that same year. The original 2012 release features Mayan inspired artwork on the box and band, as 2012 is the year the Mayan calendar predicted the end of the world; this theme has continued on with each release in the 2012 line. The 2012 by Oscar Barber Pole is bold and box pressed. It uses Nicaraguan and Honduran fillers, Honduran binder, and wrapper leaf composed of dark Mexican San Andres and Candela intertwined. The result is a complexity of flavor, with notes of spice, earth, toast, nuts, and sweetness. You have got to try one of Oscar Valladares’ most interesting blends as soon as you can!

Very good, has a sweet grassy taste with a dark coffee after taste. It also has a good burn for a box pressed barber pole, will definitely be buying again!

The initial look of this cigar is striking, and although I have been smoking cigars for years. I had never tried a BarberPole, and I am a Master Barber…. DOH! Boy how’s that for Irony! It must be mentioned that my order of various sticks, was by far the best packaging, shipping and cigar condition of any online retailer, and better than most of my Brick and Mortars.
Granted I am just down the state in Tucson, but Kudos on how quick, and quality standards.
Ok my review:
The presentation is wonderful and very unique the contrast of the Candela with the San Andreas is striking. Box pressed being a bonus
1st third: initial torch and draw was extremely green and grassy to my palate. I was worried at 1st but 2nd draw still was grassy but a green sweetness came through as I expect with a candela. Agree with Tim, that a monster pepper note on retrohale a light chocolate coffee note is present as well. As it burns into the Maduro the flavors jump a bunch with a cinnamon roll( but not sweet) comes through
2nd 3rd:
Actually the cigar mellows a bit as the candela and Maduro really start to share the same space. I start to get almost a cookie dough thickness, and a very nice oily feeling in the mouth. The aroma becomes a bit more “bread baking” vibe with a nice spice in tje mouth as well with the grass still making itself known
Final 3rd:
The aroma takes on a sweet creaminess to my nose here. The cigar stays mellow and delicious and does not get harsh as many do. It does remind me a bit of the Carreras Chupacabra Hell Cat , but without the smack in the palate. In a way it takes on almost a pipe Virginia note, but again not sweet
The ash and burn is very consistent. After letting the cigar sit for a bit to clean the palate the grassiness comes back with some coffee and chocolate in final stages of the stick
Absolutely wondeful.
My rating 92-94
Lovely

A beautiful wrapper that is not only pleasant to look at, but provides nice contrasting notes of coffee and dark chocolate from the San Andres wrapper and grassy and green tea notes from the candela. A combination of flavor notes that perhaps you wouldn’t think about joining, but definitely fit nicely together. After going through about ten of these, the burn has been surprisingly good in all, considering it’s a barber pole. Will be placing another order of these soon.

This is a great looking box of cigars. The flavors deliver on the appearance. Very smooth and good burn for a box pressed. Glad I got a box.

An absolute banger of a cigar. Have smoked two over the years, preparing to smoke my third. The first one was introductory to Oscar as a brand, this I smoked back in 22′. Last year I smoked the Barber pole in Lancero and it was absolutely tremendous. Believe the wrapper to filler ratio really highlighted the relationship between the Candella and Habano (?) wrapper. Remember getting a consistent and obvious tangerine like citrus throughout.

Update to my last review, just smoked an aged for 1 year in humidor Lancero: Absolutely tremendous.
Light up – started off with primarily Candella – incredibly creamy texture to the smoke; grassy, rich, vanilla creme, and an intensely peppery retro-hale moving into the first third.
First 3rd – developed quite quickly and maintained an evident citrus, mixed with what I call an “antique sweetness” that results from proper aging, culminating into what could be best described as an orange Pez candy flavor. This was mixed with a very smooth tootsy roll chocolate flavor from the San Andres. Peppery retro-hale dissipated and the over-all profile was creamy, rich, and sweet (yet balanced) moving into the second third.
Second 3rd – Aroma maintained consistent as described above, mouth flavor developed and mirrored aforementioned flavors. An intense mesquite entered the fold, remaining consistent down to the thumb. This mesquite, danced between charred oak, and Scotch Peet, and when hit hard would result in an intense effervescent peppery retro hale. Mesquite would result in nuanced flavors of green bell pepper, and Kalamata Olive at times. The blatant orange Pez candy flavor became a bit more subdued, tootsy-roll remained. Aroma retained a very pleasant top end sweetness amongst the mesquite.
Final 3rd – Very consistent and in line with everything mentioned above. Incredibly consistent burn line. Mouth flavor increased as final third humidity did. Flavors never became muddied or harshed. Consistent, smooth, fantastic.
Will be leaving an additional review of the actual Toro soon.
