Nick Fusco built El Mago Cigars as a tribute to his grandparents, Gonzalo and Maria Torre, who perished in the 2021 Champlain Towers collapse in Surfside, Florida. The brand name combines the first letters of their names. The James Hotel, which Gonzalo purchased on James Avenue in Miami Beach in 1989, appears on the label of every El Mago cigar. So when Fusco named a new line The James Avenue, he was not reaching for a catchy title. He was going deeper into the same story the brand has told from the beginning. What makes this 6×54 box-pressed Toro interesting beyond the backstory is the construction decision: four separate blends sharing a single format, each with genuinely different internal tobaccos rather than a cosmetic wrapper swap.
The Maduro version pairs a rich Mexican San Andrés wrapper over an Ecuadorian Sumatra-seed binder and Nicaraguan filler, rolled at Miguel Pinto’s MGE factory in Estelí. Dark cocoa, espresso, leather, a natural sweetness from the San Andrés leaf, and a building pepper note that holds through the finish. Medium-full in body, beautifully constructed, and packed twenty to a painted wood cabinet box that looks as good on the shelf as the cigar smokes.
